Backup Management
Learn how to manage your backups effectively: download them, lock important ones, delete old ones, and work within your plan limits.
Backup Limits
Each plan includes a set number of backup slots:
| Plan | Backup Slots | Storage |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | 3 | Shared |
| Pro | 5 | Shared |
| Elite | 10 | Shared |
| Ultimate | 20 | Shared |
Viewing Your Usage
At the top of the Backups page, you'll see:
Backups: 3 / 5 usedThis shows how many slots you've used out of your total.
When You Reach the Limit
If you've used all backup slots:
- The Create Backup button is disabled
- You must delete a backup to create a new one
- Or upgrade your plan for more slots
Consider locking important backups before deleting others - this prevents accidental deletion of critical backups.
Downloading Backups
Download backups to your computer for local storage or migration.
How to Download
- Find the backup you want to download
- Click the Download button
- The backup file downloads to your computer
Download Format
Backups download as compressed archives (.tar.gz or .zip). You can:
- Store them on your computer or cloud storage
- Extract them to view contents
- Upload to another server
Why Download?
- Offsite storage - Extra protection beyond our servers
- Migration - Move to another hosting provider
- Local testing - Test changes locally before applying
- Archiving - Long-term storage beyond slot limits
Locking Backups
Lock important backups to prevent accidental deletion.
How to Lock
- Find the backup you want to protect
- Click the Lock icon (🔒)
- The backup is now protected
How to Unlock
- Find the locked backup
- Click the Unlock icon
- Confirm you want to unlock
- The backup can now be deleted
Why Lock Backups?
- Milestone protection - Important saves
- Known-good states - Working configurations
- Pre-update snapshots - Before risky changes
Locked backups still count toward your backup limit, but they can't be accidentally deleted.
Deleting Backups
Remove old or unnecessary backups to free up slots.
How to Delete
- Find the backup to delete
- Click the Delete button
- Confirm the deletion
Deleted backups cannot be recovered. Make sure you don't need the backup before deleting.
Cannot Delete?
If deletion fails:
- Check if locked - Unlock the backup first
- Processing - Wait for ongoing operations
- Permissions - Need Write or Admin access
What to Delete
When making room for new backups, consider deleting:
- Old backups superseded by newer ones
- Backups from before major changes
- Temporary or test backups
- Backups you've already downloaded
What to Keep
Always keep:
- Most recent stable backup
- Backups from important milestones
- Pre-update backups until updates are confirmed working
- Any locked backups
Backup Strategy
Recommended Approach
- Lock one "golden" backup of a known-good state
- Regular backups before changes
- Download important backups for offsite storage
- Rotate old backups when creating new ones
Example Rotation
With 5 backup slots:
| Slot | Purpose |
|---|---|
| 1 | 🔒 Golden backup (locked) |
| 2 | Before current session |
| 3 | Last week's backup |
| 4 | After major achievement |
| 5 | Rotating - replaced each backup |
For Limited Slots
If you have few backup slots:
- Download backups before deleting
- Keep only the most critical online
- Consider upgrading for more slots
Troubleshooting
No Download Button
- Backup may still be processing
- Check your permissions (need Write or Admin)
- Refresh the page
Download Failed
- Check your internet connection
- Try again - temporary issue
- Backup file may be very large - be patient
Cannot Delete Locked Backup
- Click Unlock first
- Confirm the unlock
- Then delete
